Résumé : Petits contrebandiers, Jim Fisk, Nick Boyd et Luke profitent de la guerre de Sécession pour monter un fructueux trafic de coton entre le Sud et le Nord. A la fin du conflit, les trois hommes se retrouvent riches à millions, et Jim Fisk va connaître une réussite époustouflante dans le monde des affaires. Il fait alors la connaissance de la comédienne Josie Mansfield et tombe amoureux de la charmante jeune femme. Pour conquérir le cœur de la belle, il ne recule devant rien...

Le film s'inspire librement de la vie du spéculateur James Fisk et du scandale Fisk-Gould qu'il déclencha en spéculant sur le marché de l'or à la Bourse de New York en septembre 1869.


Le film a été édité en DVD dans la "Collection RKO" des Éditions Montparnasse sous le titre L'Or et la femme.
